IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Summits (ILS) provide regional opportunities to foster networking, mentorship, and collaboration. With the leadership and creativity of IEEE WIE volunteers, WIE Summits have been extremely successful and have made an outstanding impact on communities around the globe!

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is one of the largest international professional organizations dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists, and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic interests in a career in engineering. The mission of IEEE WIE is to facilitate the recruitment and retention of women in technical disciplines globally.

About the Event

Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, is hosting this year's IEEE Women In Engineering International Leadership Summit on November 16th and 17th, 2023. The primary objective of this summit is to bring together women who are actively involved in the fields of engineering, technology, and science from around the world. It provides them with a platform to not only share their knowledge, experiences, and innovative ideas but also to empower them to take on leadership roles within their respective domains.

The summit's theme, "Empowering Women in Technology: Cultivating Innovation for Sustainable Impact and Entrepreneurship," emphasizes the pivotal and influential role that women occupy in shaping the future landscape of engineering and technology. The event will showcase prominent keynote speakers. Additionally, there will be panel discussions, a Hackathon, and opportunities for networking.

This summit presents valuable chances to connect with peers, both women and men, who are engaged in STEM fields. It fosters the exchange of insights and the acquisition of knowledge from experts within a supportive and collaborative environment.

You are kindly invited to register and attend this year’s edition!

Hackathon
Topic: AI4SDG13 : Student's Hackathon on Climate Change
The Hackathon is set to bring together around 10 competitive teams, each made up of 3 to 4 participants. To promote diversity, at least half of each team's members should be female, and each team should include at least one IEEE student member. The hackathon aims to tackle the urgent issues raised by climate change affecting the Fes-Meknes region. These multifaceted challenges include a worrisome transition toward more arid and potentially even desert-like climates1. This trend is already putting a strain on water resources, a situation likely to worsen due to extensive irrigation in the Middle Atlas. This irrigation activity is compounding the already significant drying up of local lakes, with downstream effects on both wildlife and communities who rely on these water bodies. Additionally, the extensive use of water for garden irrigation and swimming pools in urban areas adds another layer of complexity to the water scarcity issue. Further complicating matters is the increase in extreme weather phenomena such as droughts, heatwaves, low rains, reduced snow falls and forest fires. These events are endangering agriculture, livelihoods, and natural habitats, in addition to having a negative ripple effect on the area's tourism sector. The hackathon aims to shed light on how these environmental stressors have a disproportionate impact on women, particularly in rural settings, where the task of collecting water and performing agricultural duties grows ever more challenging. As a special focus, teams will work on developing AI-driven technological approaches and establishing Proof of Concepts (PoCs). The aim is to use AI as a tool for comprehensive and sustainable problem-solving. For instance, AI can help in modeling and predicting extreme weather events, optimizing water resource management, identifying areas most vulnerable to forest fires, or even devising adaptive agricultural practices—all aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate action.
Greet & Meet Session
The IEEE WIE officers Greet & Meet is a gathering between affinity group officers in order to share experience and network in an informal setting. It is also an opportunity to exchange insights on successful strategies and initiatives, in addition to exploring potential collaborations to amplify our collective impact.

Women In Research
We are pleased to invite submissions for participation in the special presentation/poster session focused on current research by female PhD students in the fields of engineering and computer science. The session, to be held in English, will take place on November 17, 2023 and is intended as a platform for young researcher to communicate their recently completed or ongoing original research to the wider audience. There will be a jury evaluation of presented research projects, and recognition awards will be given in the following categories: (1) most innovative; (2) best presented; (3) most relevant to the Moroccan national needs, and (4) best solution for a sustainability problem. All participants will be granted a certificate of participation. In order to apply, fill out the form with the abstract and contact information.
